Professor Alan K. L. Chan

J.S. Lee Professor of Chinese Culture

 

The Provost serves as the chief academic officer of the University, and works closely with and deputizes for the Vice Chancellor in all aspects of University management. Professor Alan Chan assumed the role of the Provost at CUHK on 1 January 2020. As Provost, he is responsible for setting high academic standards, and ensuring excellence in education, research, and service for the University. He helps set the strategic direction of the University, promotes campus-wide academic initiatives, and defines development priorities.

 

The Provost plays a key role in faculty recruitment and development, and chairs the University Academic Personnel Committee. In consultation with the Senate and with the support of the Faculties, he provides leadership in the development, implementation, assessment and quality enhancement of all academic programmes. Working closely with the Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Faculty Deans, the Provost fosters excellence in both research and innovation. He is responsible for the allocation of funds and resources to the various academic units, and coordinates the overall academic budgeting process, including the triennial academic development proposal for the Hong Kong Government’s University Grants Committee. The Provost serves on the Governing Board of CUHK Shenzhen.
