Deputizing for the Vice-Chancellor as the principal academic officer of the University, the Provost works closely with the Vice-Chancellor on academic excellence setting high standards of Research, Teaching, and Service. He promotes campus-wide academic initiatives and defines development priorities. He is responsible for making plans for proactive academic recruitment and retention of academic staff of high international standing. In consultation with the Senate and with the support of the Faculties, the Provost provides leadership in directing development, implementation, assessment and improvement of all academic programmes, as well as the enhancement of scholarly and applied research. He coordinates academic budgeting, including proposals for the allocation of funds and resources to various units.

 

The recent development efforts included the University and Faculties strategic planning, the triennial academic development proposal, the development of a 5-year information-technology strategy, the consultations on academic personnel review practices, new strategic directions to enhance the research portfolio, the review of the focused investments scheme, the '3+3+4' implementation, manpower and resource management, the first comprehensive Academic Staff Handbook, and CUHK's Shenzhen Initiatives.
